ACADEMIC COLLABORATION IN ACTION: A VISIT BY CHULALONGKORN UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE INSTITUTE TO SOLLAT USM
On Tuesday, 27th May 2025, the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (SoLLaT), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), had the honour of hosting a delegation from the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI), Thailand, in an effort to strengthen bilateral academic collaboration and revisit the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 24th June 2024.
The delegation was led by Associate Professor Dr. Jirada Wudthayagorn, Director of CULI, accompanied by Dr. Wutthiphong Laoriandee, Deputy Director, and a team of academic and support staff. The primary objective of the visit was to discuss the implementation of collaborative activities outlined in the MoU and to further solidify institutional ties between USM and CULI.
The programme began with a welcome speech from the Dean of SoLLaT, followed by a discussion session chaired by the Deputy Dean of Academic, Career and International Affairs – Mr. Azril Ali. The session focused on the five key areas of collaboration detailed in the MoU:
- Exchange of faculty members for teaching and guest lectures.
- Exchange of researchers for classroom observations and data collection.
- Joint development of teaching and learning materials.
- Research collaboration and publication.
- Co-editing of a special issue on CEFR policies in PASAA, CULI’s flagship journal (abstract deadline: 31st May 2025).
The discussion also explored opportunities for student engagement, including short-term study abroad programmes and online activities that connect students from both institutions for intercultural exchange and collaborative learning.
The visit concluded with a campus tour, photo session, and a token of appreciation presented to the CULI delegation. The atmosphere was warm and collegial, reflecting a shared vision for meaningful academic cooperation in the years ahead. In summary, the visit by Chulalongkorn University Language Institute was a significant milestone in deepening regional academic ties. It reaffirmed the commitment of both institutions to nurturing future-ready graduates through crossborder collaboration and global engagement.
