Title : RECENT TRENDS AND PRACTICES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (ICC)
Interculturality has been a fashionable topic, a keyword for international projects, where ‘intercultural’ is often used in a very broad sense. Since the 90s, intercultural studies have become part of the curriculum in many Higher Education Institutions, while the corresponding research has undergone a well-marked paradigm shift. The talk will compare culture models and outline the differences between essentialist and non-essentialist approaches to ICC. Based on the results of a strategic cooperation project carried out by 4 European Universities, the theoretical framework will be presented from a practice-oriented perspective and will focus on the practical implications: how we can develop intercultural communicative competence effectively.
Dr. Agnes Ibolya Pal PhD. is a senior lecturer and deputy head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Communication at the Budapest Business School (BBS, CCCT) in Hungary.
She launched and co-coordinated various international projects at BBS, among them the ICCAGE project (2015-2017), and the "21st century skills in focus" programme, which won the European Language Label award in 2013. She is especially interested in cooperative and telecooperative tasks used in foreign language education in HE institutions. She was awarded a prize for Efforts of internationalization in higher education in Hungary in 2016.
She is currently participating in a research project at USM with Dr. Malini Ganapathy and Dr. Debbita Tan Ai Lin entitled Towards the reinforcement of our students’ global competencies.
