PPBLT CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY

USM PPBLT CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY; TALKS AND WORKSHOP SESSIONS HELD TO HIGHLIGHT THE PROCESS AND CHALLENGES IN DOING TRANSLATION WORK

USM PENANG, 27 October 2023 – With the theme “Translation Unveils Many Faces of Humanity”, the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (PPBLT) successfully held the International Translation Day celebrations.

The theme, earlier mentioned for this year’s celebration, serves as a great reminder that translation is not just about the exchange of words listed in a dictionary; it’s about revealing the diverse tapestry of human expressions, experiences, and ideas that exist across the globe. In short, it celebrates our shared humanity within the numerous contexts in which we live and operate in.

The talks and workshops organised in conjunction with this celebration explore various facets of translation. These include the challenges encountered by translators and the critical significance of making well-informed decisions throughout the translation process.

Meanwhile, the Dean of PPBLT, Professor Dr. Salasiah Che Lah in her speech said that, in discussing about translation and interpretation, like other disciplines, the discipline must adapt and stay in sync with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“The integration of AI into the field of translation and interpretation is not an optional one, but rather a necessity,” she said.

Salasiah also stated that the importance of translation also needs to be explored in raising the standard of the Malay language.

“When the Malay language is translated into other languages or vice versa, it contributes to the global exchange of ideas and knowledge, further enhancing the appreciation of literature and cultures worldwide,” she added.

In the forum session, panellists from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), KB Asia Sdn. Bhd., and Malaysian Institute of Translation & Books (ITBM) delved into the topic ‘Leading the Charge: Empowering Malaysia’s Translation Industry for a Global Tomorrow.’

Panellists had also discussed on how the relevant organisations can empower the translation industry and play a pivotal role in advancing the translation sector in Malaysia.

In a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected, the art of translation is more crucial than ever. It allows mankind to explore the vast spectrum of human emotions, traditions, and knowledge that make up the global mosaic.

It empowers mankind to hear the voices of those whose stories may have remained hidden, and it enables mankind to celebrate the rich cultural heritage that surrounds everyone.

Also present were Raschada Jiwalai, Consul General of the Royal Thai in Penang; Li Jie and Zhang Pijian, Consul and Vice Consul, Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Penang; Dadang Rahmat, Consul of Socio-Cultural Affairs, Consulate-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Penang; Dato’ Lio Chee Yeong, Honorary Consul of Denmark; Datin Joelyn Teoh Lay Fung, Honorary Consul of Chile; and Teoh Seng Aun, Honorary Consul of France, as well as Ummu Salmah Rahamatullah, Project Director of Celebrating International Translation Day 2023.
